In August 2012, Sheffield-based naisian went on hiatus immediately following their final gig with Savannah, Georgia based metal band Baroness. All four members continued to tour nationally and internationally in their respective bands (Awooga, Air Force Chron, pjaro), ran record labels (tye die tapes, Certain Death), and eventually came back together in late 2017.

Rejoinder is naisian's first release since reforming and sees them return with a laser sharp focus on primitive, crushing riffs and unfettered vocal aggression.

Rejoinder was documented over a number of months and many hours at the band's Tye Die Tapes studio. The recording process was natural with the singular objective of replicating the live sound that the band had cultivated through hours of practice. The effort was very much DIY to the extent that many of the amps, guitars and effects used by the band are hand built by bassist Michael's company Aitken Audio. Following the completion of the recording they were sent to the iconic mastering engineer James Plotkin (Sunn O))), Cave In, Botch) for finessing.

The lyrics reflect the band's passion for the History Channel treasure-hunting documentary Oak Island.

"90ft. Stone" opens with the punishing, single note riffs that attack throughout much of Rejoinder and drives its way to an anthemic finish. "Mantis Rising" punches its way for X minutes through before ending on an epic doom progression while the final track "Lefole" hints at the atmospheric, melodic passages that permeated previous releases. "Lefole" features the raw vocal chords of Mike Shields (ninehertz and formerly of Yorkshire-Humber doom legends Flatlands) improvising in a single take what would take many lesser doom merchants months to craft.

With Rejoinder's 3 tracks clocking in at around 13 minutes, the focus is on quality over quantity and the EP acts as the band's renewed statement of intent, simpler is superior.

I'm deeply saddened that it took me until Sept. 2022 to discover the existence of this band and album. How could my music friends have let me down so thoroughly? How could I not have just sensed the presence of this masterpiece and channeled it from thin air.
